Club Creative

Almost 20 years ago a small group of patients began to meet at Person Counseling Center as an after-care group with the assistance of the clinic’s psychiatric nurse. It's All About AttitudeLater these individuals were joined by others and became Club Creative. In 1999 Club Creative moved into its new home, located at 211 Webb Street in Roxboro NC.

Club Creative is open 5 days a week. Members and staff work side by side at the Clubhouse. Many members do not have the opportunity to practice their community living skills and Club Creative provides an excellent opportunity for them to do so with assistance, support, encouragement and guidance from staff. Members work to increase or improve their interpersonal skills, personal care skills, social skills, educational skills, pre-vocational skills and learn the clubhouse philosophy.

Club Creative has a family-like atmosphere. The motto at the clubhouse is “everybody is somebody”. At Club Creative everyone is treated with dignity and respect. Everyone has something to offer and everyone’s opinion is important.

Club Creative serves men and women in the Person County, Roxboro, NC area who suffer from serious, long-term mental illness, such as schizophrenia or bi-polar disorder. Members range in age from 18 to over 70 years old.

  • Some Club Creative members have formerly been homeless.
  • Some have a history of substance abuse problems.
  • Some are elderly.
  • Some are hearing-impaired.
  • A small percentage have physical disabilities as well as psychiatric problems.
  • Some also have developmental disabilities.

Club Creative maintains an annual membership of approximately 45 individuals. Of these, around 40 members are receiving ongoing services and, on any day, approximately 25 members come to Club Creative and participate in activities.

Clubhouse members and staff share tasks and responsibility for the successful daily functioning of all programs, including:

  • Work ordered day
  • Supported employment
  • Social and recreational programs

Club Creative is organized into work units, which are responsible for the daily operation of the clubhouse. The work units give members the opportunity to develop pre-vocational skills and to perform meaningful tasks, which are essential to the clubhouse. These tasks help members to gain or to increase their level of self-esteem.

Administrative Unit

The administrative unit includes the responsibilities of:

  • Compiling, distributing and mailing the quarterly newsletter of the clubhouse
  • Answering the clubhouse telephone,
    Making copies.

Gardening Unit

The gardening unit has a vital role in keeping Club Creative’s lawn and garden area eye-catching, warm and inviting. Many members find that working in the gardening unit provides an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and relieve stress also. The unit is responsible for:

  • basic lawn care
  • planning, planting, caring for and harvesting vegetables
  • caring for indoor and outdoor plants

Kitchen Unit

The kitchen unit prepares and serves well- balanced and nutritious lunches on a daily basis. Without these meals, many members would not receive a hot cooked meal. The fellowship of sharing a meal together is very important to the members. The kitchen unit is responsible for:

  • meal preparation
  • serving meals
  • planning menus
  • grocery shopping
  • planning and preparing holiday and special event meals

Snack Bar Unit

The snack bar unit provides inexpensive snacks and soft drinks on a daily basis.
Members operate the snack bar and keep an inventory of food items.
